Bare Metal & Trim · England-wide

Bare metal is a different job to paint.

Leading edges, exhaust stacks, plated trim and polished panels. Oxidation and heat staining brought back, then sealed so it does not go straight back.

Unpainted aluminium has nothing protecting it.

Which is why it looks worse than the paint next to it.

Paint has a clear coat between the metal and the air. Brightwork has nothing. The aluminium oxidises the moment it is exposed, and what you see as dullness is the surface reacting rather than dirt sitting on it.

That changes the work entirely. You cannot wash oxidation off - it has to be cut back and then refined, through grades, until the surface is flat enough to reflect properly. Then it needs sealing, or it starts again.

Oxidation. Bare aluminium dulls from the surface down, evenly at first and then in patches. Caught early it polishes out; left long enough it has to be cut back further.

Heat staining around exhausts and on nacelles, where the metal has discoloured rather than dirtied. Some of it comes back and some of it does not, and we will tell you which before we start.

Fine scratching from years of being wiped down. Polished metal shows every one of them in the right light, which is why it gets worked through grades rather than buffed in one pass.

How we approach metal.

Through grades, and then sealed.

01

Cut, refine, seal

Oxidation comes back through stages rather than in one pass. Stopping at the cutting stage leaves a surface that hazes within weeks.

02

We identify the surface first

Bare aluminium, anodised, plated and stainless all behave differently. Polishing anodising takes the anodising off, and it does not come back.

03

Heat staining is realistic, not guaranteed

Most of it comes back. Some of it is in the metal for good. We will tell you which before we start rather than after.

04

Sealed to slow the return

Bare metal starts oxidising immediately. Sealing buys months rather than weeks, and makes the next polish far quicker.

Two things set the interval.

Where it lives. Hangared aircraft hold a polish far longer than one on a tiedown, and a coastal field is the hardest environment there is - salt attacks bare aluminium continuously.

Whether it was sealed. An unsealed polish looks superb for a fortnight and then hazes. Sealed, the same work holds through a season and the next visit is a refresh rather than starting again.

That is why we quote the sealing as part of it rather than as an extra. Polishing without sealing is work you pay for twice.
