Four things a helicopter needs that a jet does not.
Most of the difference is in what you must not do. Rotorcraft carry surfaces where the wrong product or the wrong technique costs real money, and they collect dirt in places a fixed-wing aircraft never does.
Blades, cleaned along the span
Main and tail rotor blades get washed by hand, along the span, with pH-neutral product and soft media. We keep brushes and abrasive pads away from erosion strips, bonded joints and blade tape. Where your maintenance manual restricts a product or a method, the manual wins.
The tail boom takes the exhaust
On a turbine helicopter the exhaust streams straight down the boom, and that soot bakes on and will not wash off. It comes off by dwell and lift, not by scrubbing - scrubbing burnishes the paint and leaves a matt patch that looks worse than the staining did.
Acrylic, not glass
That big curved windscreen is acrylic, and ammonia crazes it - fine cracks that never polish out and end in a replacement panel. Dedicated acrylic product, clean water, fresh cloths, straight passes, never dry. It is the single easiest thing to get expensively wrong.
A clean deck shows you leaks
Gearbox and hydraulic weeping around the mast and transmission deck is normal in small amounts. You can only judge it against a clean surface. Degreasing the deck properly is how the next inspection tells you something real rather than reading last month's residue.
Fixed-wing aircraft spend most of their lives in clean air at altitude. Helicopters do the opposite: they operate low, slow and often off unprepared surfaces, so they pick up grit, insects, mud, agricultural spray and vegetation on every sortie. Downwash then drives all of it into places nothing else reaches - up under the belly, into gear bays, around the mast and along the boom. That is before the exhaust, which on a turbine machine stripes the tail with soot that ordinary washing simply will not remove.
Anything working offshore, on the coast or over an estuary is being salted continuously. Chloride is what turns a chip, a scratch or a worn fastener into corrosion, and it does its work under the paint where nobody is looking. This is why a wash cycle on a coastal or offshore machine is a maintenance task rather than a valet, and why most manufacturers set a minimum frequency for salt-laden environments. We work to whatever yours specifies. If you are based somewhere like Blackpool, with the apron a few hundred metres from the Irish Sea, that cycle wants to be short.
Private and corporate machines want the same interior standard as a business jet - leather, carpet, headliner, glass. Working aircraft want something different. Air ambulance, police and utility cabins have equipment mounts, floor tracking, stretcher rails and hard-wearing surfaces that need cleaning around rather than over, and they need it done to your procedures and around your shift pattern. We do both, and we do not treat them as the same job.

Yes. Blades are washed by hand with pH-neutral product and soft media, working along the span rather than across it. We stay off erosion strips, bonded joints and any tape with a brush or abrasive pad, and we work to whatever your maintenance manual specifies. If the manual restricts a product or a method on your type, that governs - not our normal routine.
That is one of the most common jobs on a turbine helicopter. Exhaust soot bakes onto the boom and the tail rotor area and ordinary washing will not shift it. We use a dwell-and-lift approach with products rated for aircraft finishes rather than scrubbing, because scrubbing is what burnishes the paint and leaves the boom looking worse than the soot did.
Nothing with ammonia or solvent in it. Helicopter windscreens are large curved acrylic panels and ammonia crazes acrylic - fine cracks that will not polish out and eventually mean a replacement panel. It depends far more on where it operates than on hours flown. An aircraft working offshore or based on the coast wants washing on a short, regular cycle because salt does not wait. An aircraft hangared inland and flown occasionally can go much longer. Your maintenance manual will usually set a minimum for salt-laden environments - we work to that.
